Running Rocks, 7 miles, Family Emergency

Tuesday started out a bazillion times better than Monday – woo! Work was still busy, of course, but I had a yummy breakfast tortilla strata for breakfast and a mid-morning laughing cow/carr’s crackers snack. I got my lunch break so I used it to walk 4 miles and read my book club book – bliss! I burned 172 calories. Then it was back to work, a 2 p.m. lunch of easy Thai curry, a yogurt snack and a sweets attack – a couple of mini reese’s cups and a couple of mini kit kats. Not horrible! After work it was time to step up the old C25K. I had been doing Week 5, Day 1 workout (3 5-minute runs), but today I moved over to Week 5, Day 2 workout – 2 8-minute runs! The first 8-minute run was easy breezy. Like, I could have gone longer! I walked for 5 minutes, then went for the second 8-minute run and, while it wasn’t as easy as the first 8, I got through with it staying at 6.3 mph – WOO! I was able to do 2.7 miles in the 30 minute program, burning 153 calories. I walked it out to get to 3 miles, which took 35.75 minutes and burned 174 calories – YAY!

And if this isn’t a reason for running what is?

Lunch workout: 1 hour = 4 miles = 172 calories

After-work workout: 36 minutes = 3 miles = 174 calories

OMG – how crazy cool is running?! Haha

After the gym I headed home talking to my family on the way home – sometimes a commute is a blessing! Then I had tacos and chips/salsa with Austin, cooked 6 Breakfast Muffin Pizzas, made 4 servings of hummus chicken salad, talked to Austin’s family, showered and got in bed for more Olympics – WOO! I was done eating, ending the day at 1,717 calories, 219 carbs, 49 fat grams and 93 protein grams. Here’s what I ate.

ALL OF THE ABOVE WAS TYPED LAST NIGHT AROUND 9 P.M.

ALL OF THE BELOW WAS TYPED TODAY…

But stuff changed – I got a call that my stepdad needed to undergo surgery. Heart surgery. He had an angiogram and it was official – he needed to go under and it needed to happen the following day. I talked to my sister and mom again and we all agreed it was too late to leave (9:30 p.m.) but we would roll out at 5:30 a.m. So I got my stuff together, took Nyquil and tried to sleep…

Today I got up at 4:30 a.m., drove to my sister’s and we headed out to Alabama. We got to the hospital by 8:30 a.m. central time and were able to visit with him before they took him down for pre-op. We waited. We didn’t know how many bypasses it would take but they did a wonderful job keeping us informed which is such a blessing in a situation like this. After 4+ hours we were told he made it through the surgery okay - and it ended up being a double bypass. We haven't gotten to see him again yet, but are anxiously waiting to see him and make sure he's okay!!

Here's some pics of Mike and our family - we just love him. I know he's my 'step' dad but he's raised me since I was 9 years old and has always been so supportive. He's a fellow Auburn grad. He tells the best corny jokes. He's obsessed with golf. He's a wonderful friend. He's a great teacher with an amazing level of patience. I could go on and on! I'm SO glad he's going to be okay.

I can' t tell you how glad I am that he's made it through this. I know it's been said before but life is just too short. Hope all is well with you and your families! Now i'm just wishing positive thoughts for his speedy recovery!

So sorry to hear about your step dad, but I'm very happy to hear everything turned out ok. The husband's stepdad went through the same thing last year. It's very scary when it happens.

P.S. Congrats on running for Day 2, what a great accomplishment!

I'm so glad everything is okay now. There is a ton of heart disease in my family, so that situation is all too familiar for me. I hope he recovers quickly! And hope you get some rest after the stressful experience!

This is my first time coming across your blog and I love it! I'm an avid reader, love fitness, and have done the C25K program before to help me get better with running too. I'm glad to hear your stepdad is alright. :)

OMG. My father had triple or quadruple bypass surgery several years back and I can totally relate to what you are going through. He will be fine ~ isn't it amazing what those doctors can do?? I'm praying for all of you! ;-)

You know, I run but i have no idea ever how many cals I burn.. I mean, I roughly know I burn about 80/mile (from Runner's World calculations), so I'm curious how you seem to have burned so few cals doing 3-4 miles. How do you calculate it??

Congrats on your running though! Another perk of running- helps with stressful times! :) I hope everything continues to get better for you and your family.

Oh my goodness! I'm sure that was a stressful situation, but I'm glad to hear that everything went okay. That was nice of you and your sister to show support for your mom too.

My debate when it comes to working out is always whether I should run or walk...I love how you can burn more calories in half of the time.

I am at the same point in my couch-5k training. I haven't exactly stuck with the program up to this point, I have just done as best as I could instead of only running a certain amount/walking a certain amount but I'm about on week 5 workout 1. It is nice to read from someone doing the same thing! :) Hope your stepDad is ok!!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your stepdad, but I'm glad that his surgery went well. No one wants to get urgent, upsetting news about a family member, so I hope that you're doing okay. Sending thoughts and prayers your way... <3

Wow, reading your post brought tears to my eyes. I love all of your pictures of Mikey. Life is so short, when I was feeling down a few weeks ago it's because one of the flight instructors I met when I went skydiving committed suicide. And it was because his girlfriend had broken up with him. :( Although I didn't know his so well, what I did know of him was great and he had such a kind spirit, I could just tell.

I also have been going through a break-up, I ended it, but it just made me think my actions and words can have an affect on others and I want to be as positive of a person as possible. Anyway, I just wanted to share that I think we go through these things sometimes as a wake-up to how precious life is. I'm so happy that things seem to be well with your family and I always appreciate how real your posts are.

I'm sorry that I just read this post and haven't commented earlier. I hope that the recovery is going well; what an intense couple of hours that must have been!

On a related note, it is great that your step-dad has been such a positive part of your life. The step-parent dynamic is always kind of weird (having had two!), but it's really wonderful when they add to the family.
